Manual transmissions typically need gear oil changed every 50,000-80,000 km. Regular fluid changes are the most cost-effective way to extend transmission life.

Warning signs include delayed or harsh shifting, slipping between gears, grinding noises, burning smell from transmission area, fluid leaks (red or brown fluid), check engine light, and difficulty engaging gears. If you notice any of these, have it inspected promptly - catching problems early often means simpler repairs.
